The Great Dictator

The classic was written, directed and produced by Charlie Chaplin and starred himself. The film was the actor’s first talking picture which was hugely successful and received fabulous reviews. The film is a bitter satire on Nazism and Adolf Hitler. The film advanced a controversial condemnation of Hitler and the Nazis and was the most commercially successful film of Charlie Chaplin.

The film released when the United States was still at peace with Nazi Germany. The film raised controversies and condemnation of fascism and antisemitism. The portrayal of the plight of Jewish characters moved the Jewish audiences. The film also features many silent scenes.

The story follows two main characters, a Jewish barber and Hynkel the dictator, both of them played by Chaplin himself. The plot revolves around the barber who is a veteran of the First World War and gets injured at the end of the war and is in coma for a long time before awakening in the Hynkel regime after around ten years. The character of Hynkel was created as a spoof of Hitler.

The film is very stirring and has the best comedy. The final speech is extremely powerful and stirring. The film has excellently portrayed the violence of war, the corrupting influence of power and the persecution of Jews during World War II. The film is a work of expertise and one of the classics.
