Bride of Frankenstein

Very few sequels are as good as the original, but Bride Of Frankenstein is one of those sequels that are definitely better than the preceding movie. It surpasses it in every way, it’s not as witty or as straightforward as the original movie was, and it also lacks some sophistication, but in the sequel – James Whale combines horror and wicked humor which makes this film an instant classic.

In Bride Of Frankenstein, much of the original cast is there – Colin Clive as Dr. Frankenstein, Boris Karloff as the monster, but Mae Clarke was dropped. There are new characters in this film, however. Clive is great as Frankenstein, but because of his broken leg, most of his scenes are shot sitting or lying down. Much of the film Bride Of Frankenstein deals with Dr. Septimus Pretorius, who is the mad scientist, and there are sexual uncertainties regarding his character. The film mainly deals with the Monster trying to find a place for himself in the world; he is craving company and human acceptance.

Bride Of Frankenstein is a mixture of horror and black comedy, and like the original, it also has German Expressionist work by cinematographer John Mescall. The camera movements are very effective, the angles are great, and there are even inventive angles that add to the horror of Thesiger’s skeletal frame. The music in the movie is exciting, and captures the mood of the film perfectly. Do watch out for the scene when the Monster’s bride is brought to life – it’s amazing well done!
