Frankenstein as a film has a sense of menace from the very beginning, and once the monster comes alive, you know why. Boris Karloff plays Frankenstein’s monster to perfection, even though he has very few dialogues and scenes, he still creates a complex and scary creature whom, despite all the odds, you can’t help being sorry for. In fact, Frankenstein as a movie has gone down in history for the great makeup effects. It’s a historic piece of cinema that has stood the test of time, and talks about the deeper issues underlying creation, perpetuation of life, loneliness and parenthood. It is a classic film that has great atmosphere, great music, and even the Surrealism of the film works wonders. The visuals are subtle, but extremely effective in capturing Mary Shelley’s story. |
Frankenstein is a movie adaptation of Mary Shelley’s famous novel by the same life, and is about a brilliant young scientist, who creates a man from parts of dead bodies, but when his creation becomes a threat to society, he regrets his actions. Frankenstein is one of the first horror films ever made, and though today it might look obsolete, it is still a great film that is impressive by most standards. Directed by James Whale, it’s a minimalist work that cuts out much of the book, yet still retains the main essence – it uses strongly Expressionist photography and rather eccentric set designs which lend a great atmosphere to the film.
