Les Diaboliques is by George Cluzot, and his wife Vera stars opposite Simone Signoret, as the wife of the schoolmaster. The tension in the movie continues till the climax, and you are scared, yet you want to know what happens next. The film has film noir overtones, and it has very simple, yet classy and powerful direction which make it a satisfying thriller to watch. There have been many remakes over the years, but don’t make the mistake of watching those – nothing compares to this one. This film has all the necessary elements to make it interesting – spousal abuse (which occurs off-camera), a drastic decision concerning the killing of Clouzot’s husband, and a growing dread that he may still be alive. You will definitely be on the edge of your seat during the last 20 minutes of the film or so, because there’s lots of tension, and the black-and-white just goes well with everything. It’s one of the best suspense thrillers out there, it keeps you guessing about what’s going to happen next, and the plot unfolds with every minute. Don’t expect cheap scares, don’t expect to jump out of your seat, this is rather the kind of film that catches you from behind when you least expect it! |
If you like amazing black and white movies, then Les Diaboliques is the movie for you. It’s one of the best psychological thrillers you could ever hope to watch, it’s not a slasher flick and there’s not even any gore – but it’s sophisticated cinema at its best.
