It’s a Wonderful Life

It’s a Wonderful Life is the most appreciated and much loved American inspirational films of all time. The film is a Christmas classic which shot to popularity with its repeated telecast on television during the festive season. The film’s success can be credited to its inventiveness, humor and affection for human beings.

The film is set in the fictional town of Bedford Falls and is a dark look at the small town American life between the two world wars depicting the class envy and fears of modernity. The story revolves around the character of George Bailey played by James Stewart whose life seems so hopeless that he contemplates suicide on the eve of Christmas. He lives his life helping others and is forced to sacrifice his pleasures as he does so. As he prepares to jump from the bridge, his Guardian Angel interrupts and saves his life by showing him the picture of life without him as a part of it.

The film, narrated through a series of flashbacks, demonstrates how George touches the lives of others and the difference he makes to the community he resides in. When shown by the Angel, George realizes his life as wonderful and truly rich, even though he was made to sacrifice his dreams of youth apart from other losses, dismay, hardships and fateful trials. This fills him with encouragement and revived enthusiasm and averts him from committing suicide.

The film is a bitter-sweet tale of life’s struggles and displays an optimistic and facile pattern of solving problems. It highlights the little gems in life that make life pleasant and livable. There are sentimental moments in the film which have been captured efficiently although it seems lengthy and a little dragged at certain places. The values portrayed in the film still hold true today. It also witnesses an outstanding performance by Barrymore in the villainous role.

The film makes an impact by nudging us to live a good life and is a very pleasant and optimistic take on the struggle called life.

Notting Hill

This romantic comedy film is set in Notting Hill, London. The premise is pure fantasy and the charm of humor and wit has been entertainingly woven together to create the magic of love. The film has witty and intelligent dialogues, delivered by easy to like and glowing actors. It is a funny and touching story about love against all odds with endearing moments and memorable characters performing with grace and style and an effortless rapport.

In a role perfectly suiting his relaxed persona, Hugh Grant plays William Thacker who owns a travel book shop in Notting Hill. As luck could have it, he is visited by America’s most established and famous actress Anna Scott, while at work, and gets successful in striking a friendship with her which eventually grows into something deeper. Anna, played by Julia Roberts, is struck by his easy going and unfazed behavior towards her and develops admiration towards him. The film then moves to the narration of success of their falling in love against all odds.

The film successfully brings two entirely different personalities together. Anna plays the aggressive, sophisticated, agile and direct character as against the wary, shy, clumsy and understated character of William. Apart from the central ones, the peripheral characters have also delivered memorable comic performances. One of the interesting creations is that of the goofy character of Spike, William’s roommate. The characters of his sister and his friends are very interesting, especially the touching portrayal of love by the married couple.

There are many funny and mischievous sequences in the film including the dinner scene which displays the idiocy people exhibit in the presence of a celebrity. Another situation where William is mistaken for a member of the press and is made to take a series of interviews with funny and irrelevant spontaneous questions has been scripted smartly. A magical sequence has also been filmed with perfection where William walks down a Notting Hill street and the seasons change behind him from summer to rain to snow and eventually spring. The film also features one of the best songs by Ronan Keating “When you say nothing at all”.

The end seems slightly inconveniencing but the magical rapport between the actors effortlessly endears the audience and the spell cast leaves no option for a better suited ending. Although predictable, the conclusion leaves the audience mesmerized and captivated by the magic of love and is thoroughly likeable.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

The film is a romantic comedy based on the exploration of the nature of memory and romantic love. It focuses on the interior states, emotions and relationships between the characters Joel Barish and Clementine Kruczynski played by Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet respectively. The film uses science fiction to portray the possibilities and consequences of removing unwanted memories from your consciousness.

The storyline plays on our desire to forget the bad things that happen to us, using targeted memory erasure, a fictional scientific procedure which may actually lead either to repetition of the same mistake or eliminate the chances of our reconciling with our experiences and the way we relate to people. There is a clever portrayal of the interplay between the interior world and the outside one and the chaos caused.

The film explores this idea in an unusual way by leading the audiences into the mind of Joel Barish who discovers that his failed love Clementine gets his memory wiped off from her mind. Shaken by this, he decides to go through the same treatment but realizes a little too late that he actually wants to hold on to the memories of his love. In due course of time, they reunite and get attracted towards each other only to realize how they were separated.

There are exceptional performances delivered by Jim Carry and Kate Winslet who bring this abstract story concept to life. The performances by the supporting characters are equally impressive. The relationships between all characters are masterfully handled to ensure none of them are superfluous.

The film is a twisty take on love which will nudge you to think about your feelings towards the important people in your life and how you relate to those feelings. It is a moving and a thought provoking film encouraging you to think about your memories and the way you relate to them. Apart from the peripheral comic scenario, the film has an emotional centre which adds to the beauty.

My Man Godfrey

This film is one of the funniest classics of all time and can be called the precursor to the group of screwball comedies that are so much in vogue nowadays. It has all the features of a comedy belonging to that group of films; funny familiar characters, witty dialogues, a little bit of slapstick humor and most of all an underlying portrayal of life in that period; and the period that this film belonged to was the 1930’s.

The film is actually about a rich eccentric family of oddballs who lead scattered yet filthy rich lives. It is their newly hired “man”, a hobo, who is able to teach the family of mad-caps the realities of life and finally brings the life together. For an audience living in the depression period in America, the film was a breath of fresh entertaining air! The film was nominated for an unbelievable six Academy awards though it actually won none, but there seems to be real faults with the film. The film was a success at the time of its release, not only a commercial success but the critics seemed to love the film as well; but the film still remains now a light hearted film to watch, though there a lot of lessons to learn from the film.

Powell creates one unforgettable character out of Godfrey and you are to discover how he is more than just an ordinary butler. Classics such as these, sure beat a night spent with some “new release”!

The Red Shoes

The Red Shoes is considered by many faithful to be the greatest film of all times, although surely it is one of the greatest musical or dance films surely. The film created at a period in time when multi-culturalism had not reached the proportions that it has reached today, it dealt with the importance of Art in human life and how Art can change human life as well.

Even till today, the film has some of the most dramatic and lush romantic scenes of film history, not to mention some amazing dance sequences which bring the film alive. The only drawback that many critics might hold against the film is the fact that the film tends to be a bit long winding considering the fact that the plot of the entire film is so utterly simple, though there are deeper meanings beneath the surface. It is the music, the décor and the dance sequences themselves that have made the film a classic and a must-watch. A story about a woman who is loved by two men offering her two different things, the film has a beautiful romantic appeal. One offers her a chance at her art and the other a chance to be loved as a woman. Moira Shearer plays the leading heroine and wonderfully accomplishes the role of the leading ballerina in the film as well.

The choreography that she as well as the rest of the ballet crew follows is one of the most inventive in cinema.
