| Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind | |

The storyline plays on our desire to forget the bad things that happen to us, using targeted memory erasure, a fictional scientific procedure which may actually lead either to repetition of the same mistake or eliminate the chances of our reconciling with our experiences and the way we relate to people. There is a clever portrayal of the interplay between the interior world and the outside one and the chaos caused. The film explores this idea in an unusual way by leading the audiences into the mind of Joel Barish who discovers that his failed love Clementine gets his memory wiped off from her mind. Shaken by this, he decides to go through the same treatment but realizes a little too late that he actually wants to hold on to the memories of his love. In due course of time, they reunite and get attracted towards each other only to realize how they were separated. There are exceptional performances delivered by Jim Carry and Kate Winslet who bring this abstract story concept to life. The performances by the supporting characters are equally impressive. The relationships between all characters are masterfully handled to ensure none of them are superfluous. The film is a twisty take on love which will nudge you to think about your feelings towards the important people in your life and how you relate to those feelings. It is a moving and a thought provoking film encouraging you to think about your memories and the way you relate to them. Apart from the peripheral comic scenario, the film has an emotional centre which adds to the beauty. |
