| My Man Godfrey | |
|
The film is actually about a rich eccentric family of oddballs who lead scattered yet filthy rich lives. It is their newly hired “man”, a hobo, who is able to teach the family of mad-caps the realities of life and finally brings the life together. For an audience living in the depression period in America, the film was a breath of fresh entertaining air! The film was nominated for an unbelievable six Academy awards though it actually won none, but there seems to be real faults with the film. The film was a success at the time of its release, not only a commercial success but the critics seemed to love the film as well; but the film still remains now a light hearted film to watch, though there a lot of lessons to learn from the film. Powell creates one unforgettable character out of Godfrey and you are to discover how he is more than just an ordinary butler. Classics such as these, sure beat a night spent with some “new release”! |
This film is one of the funniest classics of all time and can be called the precursor to the group of screwball comedies that are so much in vogue nowadays. It has all the features of a comedy belonging to that group of films; funny familiar characters, witty dialogues, a little bit of slapstick humor and most of all an underlying portrayal of life in that period; and the period that this film belonged to was the 1930’s.
