One Way Passage is a wonderful film in terms of actors, pathos, romance, set design, and direction. In the movie, William Powell is paired opposite Kay Francis – they are two doomed lovers, who do not know about each other’s conditions. Basically Powell is going to be hanged, and Kay is suffering from a terminal illness. Therein starts a beautiful unexpected romance, which has to end with the docking of the ship. However, the lovers make a promise to meet in Mexico on New Year’s Eve, and this a great scene that you should definitely watch out for.

One Way Passage is a tragic love story that is sure to get you crying. It deals with two attractive, yet doomed lovers, and the movie itself has tears, drama, and humor at their best. The Award winning story has a strong supporting cast, in the form of Frank McHugh (the drunken conman), and Aline MacMahon (as the phony countess).

The music score in One Way Passage is also great. The screenplay works well, and the length is rather short, but after all it’s a pretty old movie. The movie could be characterized with the simple words “dreamlike perfection”, and the ending is beautifully poignant. It’s an exquisite melodrama which speaks about upper class sophistication, warmth, humor, love, and tragedy – most of all, you shouldn’t miss the last scene with McHugh – it’s simply marvelous. One Way Passage is a romance story that has stood the test of time, watch it with someone you love.
