The film revolves around a story of two police detectives played by Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman working on a case of a series of murders of unparallel gruesome and shocking nature. As the film progresses, it gets slowly revealed that these are work of a single individual hell bent on preaching a sermon as the victims are being rebuked for each of the seven deadly sins of "Lust", "Gluttony", "Greed", "Sloth", "Wrath", "Envy", and "Pride". The film is rich in noir aesthetics and one of the first things to catch the attention is the look, color and texture of the movie which seems to have been de saturated to an extreme. Moreover even in the décor, there is this gloomy air of doom with ample use of dark blacks and browns, stark shadows, lights of deep yellow, and dark wooden furniture. Even the cityscape is complete with congested alleys with a murky sky and waterlogged streets due to non stop rain. The manner in which the narrative is crafted with an ominous sense of dread and alarm of an unknown fear complemented by the use of sound effects renders Se7en one of the greatest screen ventures of our times. |
If a great work of art like Da Vinci’s ‘The Last Supper’ can be described as one made in heaven, a film like David Fincher’s 1995 Neo-coir cult classic Se7en can be definitely considered to be one spewed right out of hell. Seldom one comes across such hellish imagination on screen.
