The film has witnessed some magnificent performances by Bruce Willis as the psychologist and the young boy Haley Joel Osment in the character of Cole Sear. Bruce Willis has delivered a sober and clever performance with the precise knowledge of standing back and yet creating a significant presence. The young boy too has performed like an adult with the required accuracies without trying to be cute. The film’s screenplay is realistic and emphasizes more on the psychology than on the arty shots or special effects. The film takes the realistic interpretation of ghosts instead of big scary ones with special effects which forces the audiences to believe what they are being shown. There has been efficient use of dark lights and faded colors which creates the effect of realism. The movie plays with logic and observation in understanding the psychology than emphasizing on the ghosts. The film has been directed incredibly but it has its share of flaws too. There are music pieces used in the film where an eerie silence would have suited better. In comparison to the story telling style of the film, the scene with the little poisoned girl is a little less realistic. The brusque end of the film is a little offbeat when compared to the slow path of the film. It leaves the audiences with a shock and would actually invite them for repeated watching to hunt down the clues leading to such an end. The focus is on the psychological effect than on outright horror and the film has impressive performances and incredible direction with a mind-blowing twist. All of which make it a must watch! |
